Introducing "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii" – An Exciting New Chapter in the Series

Scheduled for release on February 28, 2025, "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii" is the latest installment in the popular action-adventure series. Following the success of "Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth," this sequel shifts the focus to a fan-favorite character, Goro Majima, who will take center stage as the main protagonist. In a recent discussion with Mr. Masayoshi Yokoyama, Director of RGG Studio and Executive Producer of the Like a Dragon Series, and Mr. Hiroyuki Sakamoto, Chief Producer at RGG Studio, we gained insight into the game’s development, key features, and the creative journey behind its inception.

A New Spin on the Series

The decision to feature Majima as the lead and to incorporate a pirate theme was not made overnight. According to Yokoyama, the idea of a spin-off was already being considered as early as June or July 2023, even before the release of "Infinite Wealth." The team was eager to explore narratives that extended beyond Ichiban Kasuga, the protagonist of the series at that time. Yokoyama even humorously mentioned a potential game titled "Like a Dragon: Tuna," where Kazuma Kiryu would battle fishing boats, but this idea eventually evolved into the pirate-themed concept we see now, with keywords like "ship," "sea," and "fighting" being integral to the development.

The Allure of Spin-Offs

Spin-offs in the Like a Dragon series have offered a unique opportunity to explore different characters and storylines. Yokoyama likens the series to an all-you-can-eat restaurant, offering a variety of experiences—whether it’s meat, seafood, or something else entirely. Spin-offs allow for a more refined, balanced experience, much like a well-portioned meal. They provide a fresh perspective by placing new characters in the spotlight, allowing fans to experience the story from different angles.

Who is Goro Majima?

Majima is a character known for his enigmatic persona, often masking his true feelings and intentions. Throughout the series, glimpses of his past have been revealed, but the complete picture remains elusive. In "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii," Majima suffers from amnesia, which gradually unveils his authentic self to the players. This character development is both novel and intriguing, as it allows players to see Majima in a new light, particularly through his interactions with a boy named Noah.

The Unconventional Protagonist

Choosing Majima as the lead was a bold move, given his unpredictable and unconventional nature. This unpredictability is precisely what makes him a compelling character. Typically, protagonists need to resonate with players through their actions and emotions, but Majima’s unique character required a different approach. To make him a suitable protagonist, the developers considered two options: amnesia or time travel. Ultimately, amnesia was chosen to provide a fresh narrative and allow players to explore Majima’s character in-depth.

Dynamic Combat Styles

Combat is a significant component of the Like a Dragon series, and in this installment, Majima will showcase two distinct battle styles: Mad Dog and Sea Dog. Sakamoto explained that, similar to Kiryu’s dual battle styles in "Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name," the team wanted to keep combat engaging without overwhelming players. The Mad Dog Style draws from Majima’s established fighting techniques, allowing players to execute nimble and responsive moves effortlessly.

At the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, players had the opportunity to experience the game’s dynamic combat firsthand. The introduction of jumping into combat added a new layer of excitement, as players could now incorporate jumps into their combos. This feature, although challenging to balance, offers a refreshing twist to the gameplay.

Balancing Battle Styles

One of the challenges in developing the game was ensuring that both battle styles offered equally enjoyable experiences. The Sea Dog style, with its engaging mechanics and fun costumes, quickly became a favorite among players. However, the team recognized that the Mad Dog style needed enhancement to maintain a balanced gameplay experience. Sakamoto mentioned that they are fine-tuning the Mad Dog style to make it as appealing as its counterpart, ensuring players have a variety of combat options to explore.

Exciting New Horizons

As the release date approaches, anticipation for "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii" continues to build. Fans of the series can look forward to an immersive experience that combines beloved characters, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a compelling narrative. With Goro Majima at the helm, players will embark on a thrilling adventure that promises to be both familiar and refreshingly new.
