Recent research conducted by Trend Micro has highlighted a significant rise in the use of AI-driven tools by cybercriminals. These tools have become more affordable and easier to access, enabling attackers of all skill levels to execute large-scale attacks that mislead victims for extortion, identity theft, fraud, or spreading misinformation.

Detecting and countering AI-based threats are crucial for managing attack surface risk in enterprises and reducing overall online risk for consumers. In a recent Trend survey, 71% of respondents viewed deepfakes negatively and believed that one of their primary uses is for fraud.

Going beyond basic techniques such as image noise analysis and color detection, the platform also analyzes user behavior to offer a robust approach to identifying and stopping deepfakes. Once a deepfake is detected, Trend Micro immediately alerts enterprise security teams, enabling them to take proactive measures to prevent future attacks.

Trend Micro Deepfake Inspector can help verify if a participant in a live video conversation is using deepfake technology, alerting users that the person they are conversing with may not be who they appear to be.

Expert Insights on the Growing Sophistication of Deepfakes

According to Gartner analyst Dan Ayoub, “Readily available, high-quality GenAI applications are now capable of creating photo-realistic video content that can deceive or mislead an audience. Given the low barriers to entry in using these tools and their increasing sophistication, developing a methodological approach to detecting GenAI deepfake content has become necessary.”

Deepfakes pose significant risks to modern enterprises and individuals. An undetected deepfake can lead to financial impacts, job losses, legal challenges, reputation damage, identity theft, and potential harm to mental or physical health. In a recent Trend Micro study, 36% of consumers reported experiencing a scam attempt involving a deepfake. The FBI has also previously warned about deepfake technology being used in conjunction with video calls to carry out business email compromise attacks and fraudulently apply for remote working positions.

This technology is not only being exploited to bypass human verification but also biometric security measures such as facial recognition. Trend research has also indicated a growing tendency among cybercriminals to exploit existing large language model (LLM) tools through innovative jailbreaking techniques rather than developing custom AI tools.
