After dedicating over seven years to developing applications and working as a DevOps engineer, I recently embraced a new role as a Solutions Engineer at HashiCorp. This change was not merely a shift in job title but an opportunity to apply my technical expertise to broader business challenges. In this article, I will share insights from my journey, the critical role of mentorship, and how my technical background has been an asset in my new role.

Driving Organizational Change in the DevOps Era

My early career was deeply entrenched in the technical landscapes of a legacy IT organization that was undergoing a modernization process. At the California Department of Transportation, I encountered a disorganized Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and newly implemented ServiceNow systems, which were plagued by broken processes for automation and integration. By the time I left, significant improvements had been made, contributing to positive organizational changes.

  1. Becoming a Change Agent: I spearheaded the district-wide implementation of the ServiceNow CMDB, which centralized asset management and enhanced efficiency. Collaborating with various teams, we redesigned the change control process, reducing system downtime and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  2. Standardizing Practices: I developed best practices for web applications and SQL databases, ensuring consistency and security across all applications under our management.
  3. Automating Workflows: By fostering a DevOps team culture, we were able to automate workflows and improve deployment frequency, enhancing overall organizational efficiency.
