The Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) was a landmark event held on October 3 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in California, where Samsung Electronics unveiled its pioneering vision and innovations in software, services, and platforms. Celebrating a decade of the conference, SDC24 brought together around 3,000 developers, partners, and media representatives from across the globe under the theme “AI for All — A Decade of Open Innovation and Beyond.” This gathering offered a glimpse into the future potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as imagined by Samsung.

### Personalized and Secure AI Experiences

The event kicked off with a keynote speech by Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO, and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. Han’s address outlined an ambitious vision for delivering more personalized and secure user experiences through the integration of multi-device AI technology. He emphasized that Samsung’s extensive range of devices, from mobile phones to home appliances, positions the company uniquely to provide such tailored experiences. Han envisioned a future where Samsung devices could identify individual users and cater to their specific needs, offering an unprecedented level of personalization by recognizing users’ locations through interconnected devices and sensors within their homes.

Daehyun Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Global AI Center at Samsung Research, further elaborated on Samsung’s AI research trajectory and its security strategy. He highlighted the company’s efforts in ensuring privacy without sacrificing cutting-edge technology, focusing on both on-device and cloud AI experiences. Kim mentioned the company’s generative AI capabilities, which include text, image, and speech generation, developed in collaboration with partners to shape the future of AI.

### AI-Driven Innovations for Smarter Experiences

Samsung is actively integrating AI across its product portfolio to enhance user experiences. The company announced plans to extend its One UI interface beyond mobile devices, making it the software experience for all Samsung consumer products. Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Executive Vice President and Head of Framework R&D at the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, shared that Samsung’s Galaxy AI experiences would expand beyond flagship devices into the Galaxy A series, reinforcing the AI capabilities throughout the Galaxy ecosystem. She provided a preview of the upcoming One UI 7, which promises a fresh look and will be available to developers in beta form by the end of the year.

Young Ah Lee, Vice President and Head of UX at the Digital Appliances (DA) Business, discussed advancements in integrating Bixby, Samsung’s virtual assistant, into the AI home ecosystem. These improvements enable users to control home appliances more naturally, akin to conversing with a friend. Moon-soo Kim, Vice President and Head of Application S/W R&D at the Visual Display (VD) Business, shared insights on how Bixby enhances user interaction with TVs through simple voice commands and AI Cast, which facilitates the seamless transfer of AI-generated content from mobile devices to Samsung TVs.

In January, Samsung introduced the Samsung Visual eXperience Transformation (VXT), a next-gen content management solution. Alex YW Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Visual eXperience PM at the VD Business, showcased how users can creatively manage B2B displays using AI and access a wide range of pre-integrated solutions from partners. Lee emphasized the importance of partnering with developer communities to continue enhancing VXT and creating world-class apps and services.

### Platform Innovation and Responsible AI

Samsung also unveiled the latest updates to its SmartThings platform, which leverages open collaboration and AI to deliver personalized, seamless user experiences. Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, Device Platform Center, introduced “Home Insight,” designed to understand user lifestyles and offer tailored home reports and recommendations based on usage patterns and preferences.

Hobum Kwon, Vice President and Head of Platform at Samsung Research, highlighted Tizen OS’s new features, which include AI models powered by Samsung’s neural processing unit chips and improved connectivity with Galaxy devices. He assured that Tizen’s clean software architecture supports OS upgrades for up to seven years, ensuring sustained value for users.

The session also underscored Samsung’s commitment to responsible AI development, guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. Shin Baik, Head of Security Assurance at the Device Platform Center, stressed the importance of automated vulnerability detection using AI technology to address the evolving threat landscape, an initiative that begins with Tizen products and will expand across Samsung’s portfolio.

SDC24 showcased Samsung’s latest software technologies and developer support initiatives, reinforcing the company’s intention to build its AI ecosystem through collaboration with developers and partners. This open approach aims to strengthen Samsung’s competitive position in the AI era.
