A New Era of Cinematic Experience: Pathé Palace in Paris Unveils Samsung Onyx Cinema LED Screens

The renowned Pathé Palace cinema in Paris has recently undergone a significant renovation, marking a milestone in its history by introducing the world’s first Samsung Onyx cinema LED screens. With the addition of these cutting-edge screens and an 8K MICRO LED Samsung screen known as The Wall, the cinema promises an unprecedented movie-watching experience. This article will explore the details of this groundbreaking upgrade and what it means for the future of cinema technology.

A Historic Venue Meets Modern Technology

Pathé Palace, with its rich architectural heritage designed by Renzo Piano, has been a staple of Parisian culture for years. Following a comprehensive five-year renovation, this iconic theater now combines its historical charm with state-of-the-art technology to offer moviegoers an experience like no other. The installation of six Samsung Onyx screens is a bold step towards redefining visual entertainment in cinemas.

These six screens include four 4K Onyx displays, each over 10 meters wide, and two 2K Onyx displays, measuring 5 meters wide. The Onyx screens are known for delivering exceptional image quality, offering viewers a new dimension of visual clarity and vibrancy.

The Unmatched Visual Experience

Samsung Onyx screens are the first in the world to receive Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) certification for cinema LED displays. This certification ensures that the screens meet the stringent standards of the film industry, guaranteeing high-quality visuals. The Onyx screens boast a wide color gamut, allowing for vivid colors and detailed content that stays consistent across the entire display.

Unlike traditional film projectors, Onyx screens utilize self-lit LEDs to produce HDR images with incredibly clear blacks and striking contrasts. With a brightness level reaching up to 300 nits, these screens are more than six times brighter than conventional projectors, ensuring a captivating viewing experience.

Menno van den Berg, President of Samsung Electronics France, emphasized the transformative nature of these screens, stating, "These cutting-edge Samsung Onyx LED screens juxtapose brilliantly against the historic cinema, blending the classic with the modern to give moviegoers a truly unique experience."

Enhancing 3D Experiences

Pathé Palace is not only enhancing 2D viewing but also revolutionizing 3D film experiences with the Onyx LED screens. These screens enhance brightness and color consistency, providing a more realistic and immersive 3D experience. Viewers can enjoy films with active 3D glasses, experiencing unprecedented clarity in subtitles, images, and even minor details without the shadowing or dizziness often associated with traditional 3D cinemas.

Jacques Durand, Chief Information Officer at Pathé Group, remarked on this innovation, saying, "Samsung Onyx screens elevate the theatrical experience with pristine blacks and exceptional clarity, making every frame feel startlingly real."

Comprehensive Technological Enhancements

In addition to the Onyx screens, Samsung has installed The Wall in the cinema’s main lobby. Standing at 5.4 meters high and 9.6 meters wide, The Wall features the MICRO AI Processor, which analyzes footage in real-time to upscale it to 8K resolution, optimizing picture quality by reducing visual noise. This technology, combined with HDR capabilities, enhances colors and contrasts, offering a more detailed and lifelike image.

The Wall employs MICRO LED technology, which individually controls each pixel to deliver precision and depth in the image. This feature ensures that every visual detail is captured, providing a truly immersive experience for cinema visitors.

Smart Signage and Display Innovations

Samsung has also equipped Pathé Palace with Smart Signage (QMC series) to enhance the overall visitor experience. These displays showcase theater schedules and movie trailers both in the lobby and in front of each screening room. The vibrant colors and clarity of these displays bring movie posters to life, engaging audiences even before they enter the theater.

At the entrance of each theater room, Samsung’s Stretched Display (SH37C model) welcomes moviegoers with a crisp, clean screen in a 16:4.5 ratio. This innovative signage ensures that visitors have all the information they need in a visually appealing format.

Beyond the cinema, Pathé headquarters have also embraced Samsung technology with the installation of approximately 200 5K ViewFinity S9 monitors. The boardroom benefits from the impressive size and video capabilities of The Wall (IWA model), further demonstrating the versatility and quality of Samsung’s display solutions.

A Continued Partnership

This latest installation at Pathé Palace is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between Samsung and Pathé. Samsung has previously equipped other Pathé cinemas, including Pathé Beaugrenelle in Paris and Pathé Bellecour in Lyon, with Onyx LED screens. This enduring partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation and excellence in cinematic experiences.

As Pathé Palace opens its doors once again, it stands as a beacon of cinematic innovation, blending its historic roots with the latest in display technology. This transformation not only enhances the viewer’s experience but also sets a new standard for cinemas worldwide.
