On November 12, 2024, a pioneering initiative was announced, marking a significant step toward revolutionizing Africa’s pharmaceutical markets. The collaboration involves Prosper Africa, USAID’s e-Trade Alliance, IBM, and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Together, they are launching a pilot project aimed at enhancing the visibility and efficiency of Africa’s drug supply chains through a cutting-edge digital platform.
Bridging Gaps in Africa’s Drug Supply Chain
Prosper Africa’s Tech for Trade Alliance (AT4T) has introduced a new pilot project in Africa with the objective of testing a digital platform that promises to make the continent’s drug supply chains more transparent and efficient. This initiative aims to create a safer commercial market for medications by improving the visibility of these supply chains.
Pulse by NABP: A Game-Changing Digital Platform
The project, known as Pulse by NABP, is set to be launched in South Africa. It aims to connect major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Roche with African distributors and pharmacies. By facilitating enhanced communication between these stakeholders, the platform seeks to secure the evolving supply chain and improve the ability to identify and trace medications.
British Robinson, Prosper Africa’s Coordinator, emphasized the strategic importance of such partnerships. “Through Prosper Africa’s Tech for Trade Alliance, under the Digital Trade for Africa (DTA) initiative, we support partnerships that leverage technology to create significant financial and social returns for both Africans and Americans. We are thrilled that IBM will employ its Watson AI capabilities in this pilot to advance the traceability of drugs exported to Africa.”
Understanding the African Pharmaceutical Market
The African pharmaceutical market was valued at approximately $26.85 billion in 2023. It is projected to grow by 3.4% annually from 2024 to 2030. This growth presents a notable opportunity for US companies to explore the African market while enabling African pharmacies to capitalize on their data through AI-driven sales strategies.
However, the distribution of pharmaceutical products in Africa is fraught with challenges. Fragmented supply chains, inadequate infrastructure, and varying country-specific regulations often lead to distribution inefficiencies, limited product availability, and increased costs for patients. The Pulse pilot project aims to address these issues by enhancing supply chain visibility. This will be done in collaboration with African pharmacies and retailers. Additionally, IBM will offer training on AI tools, such as watsonx.ai, to better equip these pharmacies and retailers to make data-driven decisions.
