From Childhood Fascination to Aerospace Excellence: The Journey of Dr. Donald Mendoza

Dr. Donald Mendoza, Chief Engineer at NASA’s Engineering & Safety Center based at NASA’s Ames Research Center, shares an inspiring story of how his early fascination with flight and wildlife led him to a prestigious career in aerospace engineering. He credits his childhood experiences in the countryside with sparking his lifelong passion for aviation and space exploration.

“From my earliest childhood, flight had always captivated me. I lived out in the boonies and the farmlands, so I didn’t have neighbors to go and play with. If I wasn’t working, I was left to my own devices, and often, I would just be captivated by the wildlife and in particular, the birds of prey that I would see,” says Dr. Mendoza.

Childhood Inspirations

Growing up in rural areas provided Dr. Mendoza with plenty of solitude, which he used to observe nature closely. The birds of prey, in particular, fascinated him. “To me, they represented a freedom of some kind or another. These birds and the view they have — they can take in so much. So, from that point on, I knew I wanted to be involved in flight and aviation,” he recalls.

This early connection with nature’s aviators nurtured a dream that went beyond mere observation. The freedom and perspective these birds enjoyed were something Dr. Mendoza aspired to experience himself, catalyzing his desire to delve into the world of flight and aviation.

Avid Reader and Aspiring Aviator

Dr. Mendoza’s fascination with all things related to flight and spaceflight soon turned him into an avid reader. “I couldn’t get enough of it. I became an avid reader, whereas before, I wasn’t much of a reader. I couldn’t get enough material to read about my heroes from flight and space. They became my role models,” he explains.

Through reading, he learned about the rigorous education and dedication required to excel in these fields. This realization led him to adopt a mindset of academic, physical, and athletic excellence. “The path that they took involved, at some point or another, a pretty rigorous education and dedication to doing well academically, physically, or athletically. So, I threw myself into that entire sort of mindset,” he adds.

A Dream Realized

Dr. Mendoza’s dedication paid off when he joined the Air Force. This opportunity allowed him to work on and fly aircraft he had once only dreamed about while flipping through the pages of Aviation Week and Space Technology magazines. “When I was working for the Air Force, I was able to fly and work on aircraft that I would dream about, looking at in the magazines. Here they are, right in front of me,” he says with a sense of fulfillment.

From Atmospheric Flight to Human Spaceflight

His career trajectory took him as close as possible to that of a flight test engineer. The transition from being captivated by atmospheric flight to working in human spaceflight has been particularly rewarding for him. “So, my career has been as close as possible to that of a flight test engineer. And then, right on the heels of being captivated by atmospheric flight, working in human spaceflight has put me over the Moon,” he shares.

Good to Know: The Role of a Flight Test Engineer

For those unfamiliar with the term, a flight test engineer (FTE) is responsible for developing and executing flight test plans to ensure aircraft and spacecraft systems meet their design specifications and operate safely. This role requires a deep understanding of aerodynamics, avionics, and various engineering disciplines. FTEs often work closely with pilots and other engineers to design, conduct, and analyze flight tests, making it a highly interdisciplinary and critical position in the field of aerospace engineering.
