Such is the story of Rebecca Mataya, whose journey to NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, was unplanned yet seemingly destined. Mataya, originally from Picayune, Mississippi, found herself frequently visiting NASA Stennis as part of her job with a local business. On one such occasion, she encountered a construction worker in need of directions while he was waiting to obtain a visitor’s badge. Demonstrating her helpful nature, Mataya provided him with a map and highlighted the correct route.
This seemingly insignificant act of kindness did not go unnoticed. The receptionist at NASA Stennis observed Mataya’s proactive approach and mentioned a job opening at the center. The receptionist appreciated how Mataya’s behavior embodied the core values of NASA Stennis—hospitality and a can-do attitude. This encounter marked the beginning of a career that Mataya now reflects on as serendipitous.
Reflecting on her journey, Mataya stated, “Looking back, it was not just about finding a job – it was about NASA Stennis finding me, and me discovering a place where I would build a fulfilling career.”
From the moment she first stepped into NASA Stennis, Mataya was captivated by the experience. Each day has been an opportunity for learning and experiencing awe-inspiring moments, such as witnessing a test stand up close and interacting with rocket engineers.
Her professional journey began in 2008 when she joined as a support contractor. Over the years, she has held various positions, ranging from lead security support specialist to technical writer and program manager. Each role built upon the foundation laid by the previous one, allowing her to grow and develop professionally.
Since 2022, Mataya has been working as a budget analyst in the NASA Stennis Office of the Chief Financial Officer. Her responsibilities include overseeing the planning, programming, budgeting, and execution of funds for all Office of Strategic Infrastructure work within the NASA Stennis Center Operations Directorate. Additionally, she manages budgets for NASA Stennis Construction of Facilities projects and the congressionally approved Supplemental Funding portfolio.
“It is a role that requires adaptability, strategic thinking, and financial oversight,” Mataya explained. “I have cultivated these skills through years of experience, but more than that, it is a role that allows me to contribute something meaningful to the future of NASA and space exploration.”
Academic pursuits have also been an integral part of Mataya’s journey. She is currently completing her master’s degree in Business Administration from Mississippi State University, having previously earned her bachelor’s degree from the same institution and an associate degree from Pearl River Community College.
“My career has been shaped by growth and achievement, but the greatest highlight has always been the incredible people I have had the privilege of working with,” she noted. Walking through the halls of NASA, where top leaders recognize her by name, is a testament to the trust and relationships she has fostered over the years.
Mataya’s supervisors have consistently entrusted her with increasingly complex projects, confident in her ability to meet challenges and deliver results. This trust has also provided her with opportunities to mentor interns and early-career professionals, guiding them just as she was once guided.
“Seeing my colleagues succeed and knowing they have reached their goals, and championing their progress along the way, remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” she shared.
