iOS 18 Launches Today: Enhancing iPhone Personalization and Capabilities

Apple has officially released iOS 18, a significant update designed to offer iPhone users worldwide enhanced personalization options, a comprehensive redesign of the Photos app, and substantial upgrades to Messages and Mail. This latest version aims to make the iPhone more personal and capable than ever before.

Starting next month, Apple will introduce "Apple Intelligence," a personal intelligence system that blends the power of generative models with personal context to deliver highly relevant and secure intelligence.

Enhanced Customization Options

iOS 18 provides users with more customization possibilities for their Home Screen. Users can arrange app icons and widgets to frame the wallpaper and create the perfect layout for each page. Options for presenting app icons and widgets in light, dark, or colored tint modes are available, and users can also make app icons appear larger for a streamlined look.

The Control Center has been redesigned to be more flexible, allowing users to organize powerful control groups such as favorites, media playback, Home controls, and connectivity. A new controls gallery featuring options from third-party apps ensures that favorite controls are always just a swipe away. Additionally, users can access their preferred controls from the Action button and even modify or remove controls from the Lock Screen.

Major Photos Redesign

The Photos app has undergone its most significant redesign yet, making it easier to find and relive special moments. The new layout unifies the library into a familiar view, while new collections like Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips automatically organize the library using on-device intelligence. Users can customize their layout to reflect what is most important to them and pin favorite collections for easy access.

Enhanced Communication Features

Messages have received major updates to improve user expression and connectivity. Formatting options such as bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough allow users to convey tone better. New text effects bring words to life, and emoji and sticker Tapbacks offer endless ways to react in conversations. Users can also compose an iMessage to send later.

For times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable, Messages via satellite connects users to a satellite right from the Messages app, allowing them to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks via iMessage and SMS. The Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging when communicating with contacts who do not have an Apple device.

The Phone app has also been enhanced to help users stay organized. It now allows users to record and transcribe live calls, making it easier to recall important details later. Call participants are notified before a recording begins, and transcripts are saved to the Notes app for quick search and review.

Intelligent Mail Categorization

Later this year, Mail will introduce intelligent categorization to help users manage their inboxes. The Primary category focuses on time-sensitive messages, while Transactions, Updates, and Promotions are grouped by sender in a new digest view. This feature allows users to quickly scan for important emails.

Distraction-Free Browsing with Safari

Safari remains the world’s fastest browser and now offers more capabilities for a distraction-free browsing experience. Highlights intelligently surface key information after a webpage is loaded. The redesigned Reader provides a streamlined view, summary, and table of contents for longer articles. With Distraction Control, users can hide disruptive items on a webpage, such as sign-in banners or content overlays.

The New Passwords App

The Passwords app, built on the foundation of Keychain, makes it easier for users to access their credentials, including passwords, passcodes, and verification codes. The app features secure end-to-end encryption, seamless syncing across devices, and alerts for easily guessed, reused, or compromised passwords.

Empowering Privacy Features

iOS 18 introduces tools to manage app visibility, contact sharing, and iPhone connectivity to accessories. Users can lock and hide apps to protect private information. Locked apps hide content from search and notifications, while hidden apps are moved to a locked, hidden folder. Users can share specific contacts with apps and enjoy a more seamless and private experience when connecting third-party accessories.

Apple Intelligence Coming Next Month

Apple Intelligence, deeply integrated into iOS 18, leverages the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify tasks—all while protecting user privacy. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available next month, offering new experiences that are intuitive and easy to use.

Writing Tools will enable users to refine their text by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing it in apps like Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. The Photos app’s Memories feature allows users to create movies by typing a description. Users can search for specific photos and moments in videos using natural language. The new Clean Up tool can remove distracting objects from photos without altering the subject. The Notes and Phone apps will allow users to record, transcribe, and summarize audio, with Apple Intelligence generating summaries of recorded calls.

Siri will become more natural and flexible, with a new design featuring an elegant glowing light around the screen edge. Users can type to Siri at any time and switch between text and voice. Siri’s language understanding capabilities will improve, allowing it to follow along when users stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next. Siri will also answer questions about Apple device features and settings.

Apple Intelligence models will run entirely on the device, and the introduction of Private Cloud Compute will extend the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud, unlocking even more intelligence while protecting user privacy.
