Garmin Unveils G3000 PRIME: The Next Generation in Integrated Flight Decks

Garmin, a leading name in aviation technology, has recently introduced its most sophisticated integrated flight deck yet – the G3000 PRIME. This new development sets a benchmark in avionics with its sleek all-touchscreen displays, adaptable open system architecture, and advanced connectivity options. Aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency while reducing pilot workload, the G3000 PRIME, now FAA TSO certified, targets several aviation markets including Part 23 turbine, military, and advanced air mobility sectors.

A Legacy of Innovation

Phil Straub, Garmin’s Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Aviation, highlights the company’s journey of innovation over the past two decades. Beginning with the revolutionary G1000 integrated flight deck, Garmin set a new standard in the general aviation cockpit. Ten years later, the G3000 brought touchscreens and new technologies like Garmin Autoland, further enhancing the light turbine cockpit experience. With over 30,000 Garmin integrated flight decks in operation, the G3000 PRIME is the latest testament to Garmin’s dedication to advancing aviation technology.

Revolutionary Display Technology

The G3000 PRIME introduces expansive 14-inch primary display units (PDUs) featuring edge-to-edge, sunlight-readable glass that resists fingerprints. These displays boast significant performance upgrades, including quadrupled memory and gigabit system connectivity which is up to 100 times faster than previous models. The multi-core processors more than double the processing power, drawing from Garmin’s expertise in certifying multi-core technology for various aviation markets since 2017. Higher refresh rates mean smoother animations and a more responsive user experience.

Secondary display units (SDUs) complement the PDUs, allowing for data entry and system control, and can also display multifunction applications. These 7-inch SDUs offer a 40% increase in screen area and can serve as integrated standby flight instruments in some aircraft, eliminating the need for separate standby displays.

Advanced Touchscreen Interaction

The G3000 PRIME’s advanced multi-touch interface supports up to 10 simultaneous inputs, enabling both pilot and copilot to interact with the same display. This technology allows for precise inputs while providing hand stabilization on the screen. Dedicated control devices offer intuitive physical control over frequently used functions, which is beneficial for both Garmin-designed and third-party devices, including hands-on throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controllers in the military sector.

User-Friendly Interface

The G3000 PRIME boasts a modern user interface combining Garmin’s extensive experience in avionics design with a sleek look. Enhanced fonts and icons improve clarity, while organized menus ensure easy access to essential functions. The interface features Primary Flight Windows (PFW) and Multi-Function Windows (MFW) with full-screen or split-screen options to maximize situational awareness. Quick access bars facilitate one-touch opening of apps like maps, traffic, weather, and charts, while interactive engine and electrical indications provide easy access to system controls.

The Window Manager feature allows pilots to configure app displays and window sizes across the flight deck from one SDU. It also offers preset options that configure all displays with a single command, streamlining the setup process for various flight phases.

Enhanced Flight Management Tools

The G3000 PRIME includes an advanced Flight Management System (FMS) with tools like the Modified Flight Plan. This feature allows pilots to preview flight plan changes side-by-side, including performance calculations or what-if scenarios. An Emergency Return function is available to simplify pilot responses during in-flight emergencies shortly after takeoff. The system also offers improved Taxiway Routing for automated route guidance on both 2D maps and 3D Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) depictions.

Automation features include smart checklists linked to crew alerting system (CAS) messages, enabling pilots to quickly access the appropriate checklist with a single tap. These checklists can sense indications and display whether the item is in the correct position or provide options for viewing detailed synoptics. Integration with Garmin’s Electronic Power Distribution Systems replaces traditional switches with electronic circuit breakers, ensuring a streamlined cockpit experience.

Unmatched Safety Innovations

Garmin’s G3000 PRIME is equipped with a range of safety-enhancing technologies unique to Garmin. Among these is Autonomí, which includes the award-winning Garmin Autoland. This technology can take control of the aircraft to land it safely in emergencies when the pilot is incapacitated. Other safety features include Smart Glide, Smart Rudder Bias, Electronic Stability Protection (ESP), Emergency Descent Mode (EDM), and Garmin Autothrottle, all contributing to a safer flight experience.

Garmin’s terminal safety solutions, such as Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA), enhance G3000 PRIME-equipped aircraft. ROA analyzes GPS and ADS-B traffic information relevant to airport runways and taxiways to alert crews to potential runway incursions or collisions. This builds upon other safety solutions like Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System (ROAAS), 3D SafeTaxi®, and Garmin SurfaceWatch.

Seamless Connectivity and Integration

The G3000 PRIME supports various connectivity options including Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth®, SiriusXM, and Connext Satellite Services, ensuring pilots stay connected. Garmin’s PlaneSync management system automates database updates, logs flight and engine data, and allows remote checking of fuel and system status through the Garmin Pilot app. Automated cockpit functions, such as flight plan uploads via PlaneSync, provide pilots with real-time data to enhance decision-making.

The G3000 PRIME also supports Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC), facilitating faster departure clearance and enroute data link message exchanges with air route traffic control centers.

FAA Certification and Availability

Having received FAA TSO certification, the G3000 PRIME will soon be available in various aircraft models as announced by manufacturers. For more information, visit Garmin’s official website.

Garmin’s Commitment to Innovation

Garmin continues to revolutionize the aviation industry with its innovative solutions. As a leading provider to general aviation, business aviation, rotorcraft, advanced air mobility, government and defense, and commercial air carrier sectors, Garmin remains committed to enhancing the flight experience and ensuring safety. The company’s dedication to innovation is evident in its receipt of the Robert J. Collier Trophy for Garmin Autoland, the world’s first certified autonomous system for emergency aircraft landing.
