Garmin Announces Certification of G5000 Integrated Flight Deck for Cessna Citation XLS+ and XLS Gen2 Aircraft

OLATHE, Kan. — September 10, 2024 — Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) has proudly announced the certification of its G5000® integrated flight deck for Cessna Citation XLS+ and XLS Gen2 aircraft. This milestone builds upon Garmin’s successful G5000 upgrade program for Citation Excel and XLS aircraft, aiming to modernize cockpits, reduce operational costs, and enhance situational awareness for flight crews. This upgrade also addresses the long-term issue of obsolete avionics components.

Enhanced Avionics Suite for Modern Aviation

“The certification of the G5000 for Cessna Citation XLS+ and XLS Gen2 jets represents a significant achievement for both Garmin and our customers,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin’s Vice President of Aviation Sales and Marketing. “We are excited to expand our G5000 program to over 1,000 eligible aircraft, offering a state-of-the-art avionics suite that enhances safety, situational awareness, and operational efficiency. This certification ensures that the Citation Excel and XLS fleet will remain technologically advanced for years to come.”

Advanced Flight Deck Solution

The G5000 flight deck for Citation XLS+ and XLS Gen2 features three landscape-oriented flight displays with split-screen capabilities. This allows pilots to view maps, charts, checklists, TAWS (Terrain Awareness and Warning System), TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System), flight plans, and weather information simultaneously. The system includes two intuitive touchscreen controllers for easy navigation and smooth operation. Additionally, two GI 275 electronic flight instruments can serve as standby attitude indicators (ADIs).

Installation of the G5000 includes a fully digital Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), which offers precise performance throughout the aircraft’s flight envelope and assists in managing speed and performance. The system also includes Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) as a standard feature. In the event of cabin pressurization loss, EDM can automatically descend the aircraft to a preset altitude without pilot intervention, helping to prevent hypoxic situations. The Underspeed Protection (USP) feature assists with airspeed management and enables fully coupled go-arounds, significantly reducing crew workload.

The G5000 also provides access to more airports and lower approach minimums globally, as it is PBN/RNP 0.3 certified, enabling LPV/APV approach capabilities.

Enhanced Terminal Operations

The Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) in the G5000 has been upgraded to include a 3D exocentric view of the airport environment, enhancing situational awareness during taxiing. SVT displays 3D building footprints, including hangars, terminals, towers, taxiways, aprons, and signs, which helps reduce runway incursions by providing better situational awareness.

A new feature called Taxiway Routing allows flight crews to input taxi routes via the touchscreen controller, providing guidance on 2D navigational maps or 3D SVT depictions. SurfaceWatch runway monitoring technology complements these features by providing indications and alerts to prevent pilots from taking off or landing on the wrong runway or a runway that is too short. It also displays remaining runway distance information during takeoff and landing.

ADS-B and Weather Radar Integration

The G5000 upgrade includes a fully integrated Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) solution that is compliant with DO-260B/TSO C166b standards and utilizes antenna diversity to meet global mandates. ADS-B In traffic data is analyzed by Garmin’s Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA) technology, which alerts crews of potential runway incursions involving airborne aircraft, ground aircraft, and vehicles. ADS-B In also includes subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather and ADS-B In traffic, offering features like TargetTrend.

The GWX 8000 StormOptix weather radar provides a comprehensive weather picture with auto mode, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. The radar includes hail and lightning detection and offers a predictive windshear warning system.

Connectivity Features

The optional GDL® 60 datalink allows for 4G LTE cellular or Wi-Fi® connectivity, enabling Garmin’s PlaneSync connected aircraft management system. PlaneSync automates database updates, provides real-time remote aircraft status, and automatically transmits flight log and engine data to the cloud after landing. The system also supports Connext® global datalink services, offering worldwide satellite weather coverage, voice calling, email, and text messaging. Additionally, SiriusXM® satellite weather and audio entertainment links are integrated into the upgrade. With FANS-1/A+ and ACARS support, XLS+ and XLS Gen2 owners can fly the North Atlantic Track System (NATS), and the upgrade supports CPDLC, including Link 2000+ and FAA DataComm, for departure clearance and enroute datalink services.

New Upgrade Options for Citation Excel and XLS Aircraft

Existing and new G5000 Excel, XLS, XLS+, and XLS Gen2 operators can benefit from Garmin’s enhanced G5000 optional features, including upgraded SVT with 3D SafeTaxi®, Taxiway Routing, GWX 8000 StormOptix weather radar, ADS-B In, and PlaneSync connected aircraft management.

The G5000 integrated flight deck for XLS+ and XLS Gen2 aircraft is now available through Textron Aviation Service Centers and includes a 3-year standard warranty.
