Dragon Age: The Veilguard – A Highly Anticipated Return to Thedas

BioWare’s beloved fantasy RPG series is making a grand comeback with the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on the PlayStation 5, set for October 31. This release comes nearly a decade after the last installment, much to the delight of fans worldwide. The new game is set in the northern region of Thedas and offers players the opportunity to explore the magical city of Tevinter for the first time. As a newcomer to the world of Thedas, my recent hands-on experience with Dragon Age: The Veilguard was a fascinating introduction to its rich storytelling, intuitive combat system, and enchanting visuals.

Extensive Character Customization

My journey in The Veilguard began with an in-depth exploration of its expansive character creation tool. The game opens with an animation that recaps the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, setting the stage for the new adventure. The Dragon Age series is renowned for its detailed character customization, but The Veilguard takes it to a new level. Players can customize almost every physical aspect of their character, from diverse head and body shapes to tattoos, makeup, and facial scars. The selection includes nearly 100 realistic hairstyles, showcasing the developers’ meticulous attention to detail.

After spending nearly half an hour customizing my character (and I could have easily spent more time), I experimented with the new lighting preview feature. This feature allows you to view your character in four different lighting settings, ensuring that your creation matches your vision before you begin your journey through Thedas.

Choosing Your Path: Races, Classes, and Factions

As with previous games in the series, the character creator in The Veilguard allows you to choose your character’s race and class. Additionally, the game introduces a new feature where players can pick from six Factions: Grey Wardens, Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Lords of Fortune, the Mourn Watch, and Antivan Crows. Your choice of Faction will significantly influence your character’s backstory and future dialogue options, adding another layer of depth to the gameplay.

Intuitive Combat System

One of the highlights of my experience with Dragon Age: The Veilguard was its fast-paced and intuitive combat system. As someone who considers themselves a beginner in most game genres, I found the combat controls easy to pick up. At the same time, the game offers a high skill ceiling for more advanced players who want to execute combo attacks with their companions.

In The Veilguard, you control your companions’ abilities through the new Ability Wheel. Unlike Dragon Age: Inquisition, where you could switch between and fully control your party members, the Ability Wheel allows you to pause the action and trigger abilities for both yourself and your companions. This feature provides a natural switch between real-time combat and strategic planning, allowing for the execution of satisfying combo attacks and Ultimate abilities.

Exploring Thedas

The visual fidelity of The Veilguard is truly immersive, encouraging players to explore its expansive world. Upon entering Minrathous, the capital of Tevinter, players are greeted with vivid colors and impressive depth of field. The details are meticulous, from raindrops splashing into puddles to the towering architecture and distant statues.

The game’s graphics shine particularly brightly when you traverse the Arlathan Forest on a quest to find missing Veil Jumpers. The contrast between the shadow-casting trees and the sunlight filtering through the branches highlights the developers’ attention to lighting and photorealism.

Companions: The Heart of the Story

The companions you meet on your journey through Thedas are more than just side characters; they are integral to the narrative and gameplay. Though my limited playtime didn’t allow me to meet the entire cast, the companions I did encounter left a lasting impression.

John Epler, Creative Director at BioWare, emphasized the importance of companions in the game, stating, “The companions are really the stars of the show just as much as anyone else.”

Early in the game, you’ll meet Neve Gallus, a self-assured private investigator who helps locate Solas to prevent a major catastrophe. Raised in Minrathous, Neve’s confident demeanor and Ice Breaker ability, which rains down shards of ice on enemies, make her an invaluable asset to the team.

A World of Rich Storytelling and Engaging Gameplay

The depth of the character creator, the rich RPG elements, and the intuitive real-time combat in The Veilguard make it a must-play for fans of the series and newcomers alike. The game’s ability to quickly immerse players in its world while offering complex gameplay mechanics ensures a well-rounded experience.

The Veil between Thedas and the Fade will lift this Halloween, as Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases on October 31 for the PlayStation 5. Don’t miss the chance to embark on this long-awaited adventure and explore the magical world of Thedas in stunning detail.
