Celebrating a Decade of Destiny: Reflecting on 10 Years of Guardianship

Can you believe it’s been an entire decade since Bungie’s "Destiny" first hit the shelves on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4? Ten years have passed since players first chose to become Hunters, Titans, or Warlocks, and embarked on a journey through a sprawling sci-fi universe, crafting their Guardians from scratch. I still remember the adrenaline rush of facing a formidable Fallen Walker in the Cosmodrome during the Destiny alpha—those were the early days of what would become an iconic gaming experience.

To mark this significant milestone, we reached out to developers from PlayStation Studios to share their cherished memories and professional insights into what makes Destiny so compelling and enduring.

A Decade of Guardian Adventures

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Destiny, let’s dive into the reflections and experiences shared by some of the most passionate developers within the PlayStation ecosystem.

Reconnecting Through Destiny

"When Destiny first launched, I felt an immediate connection to its world and gameplay. I reached out to my old high school friends—who lived in different towns—and convinced them to buy a PS4 just to join me. The game reignited our friendship, leading to a weekly game night that has been ongoing since 2014. Destiny was the catalyst for our reconnection and deepened our bond even further.

As a game director, I’m always analyzing animations, and Destiny’s cinematics and enemy animations have consistently impressed me. Each faction in the game feels unique, with distinct personalities conveyed through their movements. Bungie’s mastery of full-body inverse kinematics (IK) rigs is truly commendable."

A Birthday Gift that Kept on Giving

"I got Destiny two months after its release as a birthday present to myself, and it has provided countless moments of joy over the past decade, along with a fireteam of lifelong friends. One moment that stands out is the opening mission of the Shadowkeep expansion. A friend who made it out of the Hive’s tunnels first exclaimed, ‘Oh my god, you guys gotta get up here, now.’ The awe and horror of seeing a massive pyramid embedded in the lunar rock still gives me chills. It was one of the best reveals I’ve ever witnessed.

As a lighting artist, Destiny is a huge source of inspiration for me. From the stunning skyboxes to the excellent use of color and silhouette, the game masterfully guides players through fantastical spaces. Working on a project with such creative freedom in color and atmosphere is a dream of mine."

Homecoming in the Tower

"Destiny has been a constant companion since September 2014. I begged my aunt to get it for me as an early Christmas gift, and it has been with me through high school, college, and my career at PlayStation. Every time I enter the Tower, it feels like coming home, making the loss of the first one devastating and the rediscovery in the Pale Heart elating.

Destiny has achieved an incredible symbiosis between developers and players, creating intense emotional connections. As a narrative and mission designer, the longevity and depth of Destiny’s world-building leave a profound impression on me. It’s a standard I aspire to in my future career."

Sam Jordan, Designer, Insomniac Games

The Thrill of Raiding

"My earliest Destiny memory is running Relic Iron loops on Mars for a friend. However, my favorite memory is when my raid team defeated Nezarac on contest mode after wiping during the final stand, thanks to one friend’s insistence on using Osteo Striga. The player expression through buildcrafting keeps me constantly intrigued, whether it’s creating orbs on Arc Hunter, locking down battlefields on Stasis Warlock, or crafting safe havens on Void Titan. Happy 10th anniversary, Destiny—you’ve truly become a legend."

Matthew Makuch, Senior Technical Designer, Bend Studio

The Crown of Sorrow Jacket

"Each Destiny raid has a physical jacket you can buy if you complete it in the first week. My favorite is the Crown of Sorrow jacket, featuring a chalice and my gamer tag. I didn’t have a clan, so I tried looking for groups (LFG). The difficulty was intense, with most hits nearly killing me. After being kicked from one group, I joined another LFG the next day, only to find myself with speedrunners who set a world record two weeks later.

At the final boss, we faced random crystals requiring melee attacks. With ten minutes before reset, we wiped on an enrage just before defeating the boss. But we rallied and killed the boss with only minutes left. In less than 24 hours, I experienced the lowest and highest points of my Destiny journey."

Jeffrey Lininger, Senior Game Designer, Guerrilla

The Social Sandbox

"One of my favorite aspects of Destiny is its blend of a social sandbox and an addictive TV show. Guiding friends through their first Vault of Glass raid was a brilliant experience. Sharing my excitement and watching them figure out each mechanic was immensely satisfying.

Destiny is also a world rich with lore, akin to reading the Books of Sorrow. Whether exploring the Pale Heart or defeating Skolas, the game’s storytelling and world-building are deeply impactful. Telesto is also the Besto."

Luke Gillard, Senior Functional Tester, Guerrilla / PlayStation QA

A Visual Masterpiece

"The most memorable moment for me was the entrance of the Witch Queen expansion, cannonballing through beautiful locations that left me speechless. Destiny 2 is a visual masterpiece, with environments rich in narrative design and lighting that significantly influence my approach to similar projects. The artistic talent of the Destiny team sets high standards for our industry, continually proven with each new expansion."

Daniel Sewell, Senior Lighting Artist, Haven
