NewsDestiny 2: Heresy Debuts February 4 - Exclusive Insights

The return of the Dreadnaught, a legendary Hive ship and the Throne World of Oryx, marks a significant moment in the Destiny universe. This formidable vessel, which poses a dire threat to humanity, sets the stage for new adventures in the upcoming release of Destiny 2: Heresy. This installment, the third episode and the concluding chapter of the Light and Darkness Saga, is set to launch on February 4. Recently, the Destiny team hosted a livestream event offering an in-depth preview of what players can expect from Heresy, featuring exclusive interviews with developers and live gameplay demonstrations.

In this post, we will highlight some of the key aspects of Heresy that were showcased during the livestream. For those interested in more details, a complete recap of the event is available online.

### The Dreadnaught’s Menacing Return

The Dreadnaught, orbiting the planet Saturn within its majestic rings, has never truly left the lore of Destiny. It previously served as a daunting reminder of the Guardians’ battle against Oryx in The Taken King expansion and later as a base for the forces of Xivu Arath. In Heresy, the Hive ship re-emerges as a central element.

According to Nikko Stevens, Destiny 2’s Narrative Architect, “The significance of the Dreadnaught’s return in Heresy lies in its transformation. We will engage with it in entirely new ways.” The reawakening of the Dreadnaught after nearly a decade has captured the attention of the Vanguard and Guardians throughout the system. This resurgence offers players the opportunity to explore what has become of the Dreadnaught after Oryx’s defeat and the subsequent decay of its halls.

### Venturing Into The Nether

In Heresy, players will embark on a mission into the Dreadnaught itself through a new activity called The Nether. This adventure promises a dynamic blend of exploration, combat, and gameplay modifiers, along with escalating challenges and enticing rewards, ensuring that players remain engaged each time they board the ship.

Stevens elaborates, “The Dreadnaught in Heresy unleashes a continuous surge of Taken forces and corruptive power. This torrent of corruption poses a formidable challenge to Guardians attempting to board the Dreadnaught, and that’s where The Nether comes into play.”

The Nether features area patrols, numerous challenging enemy encounters, and epic boss battles, all set within the eerie corridors of the transformed Dreadnaught. Guardians will work to disable the ship’s weaponry and prevent the spread of Taken corruption. Drawing from previous rogue-lite experiments in Destiny 2, such as The Coil from Season of the Wish and Deep Dives from Season of the Deep, this activity offers a constantly evolving experience. For instance, after completing a section, the power level of enemies increases. Additionally, The Nether introduces new gameplay mechanics through boons that directly impact combat.

Three types of boons are available for players to collect: minor, major, and corrupted. Minor boons enhance stats and can stack upon collection. Major boons, obtained by completing a section, offer significant gameplay benefits like building up Static Charge stacks by sprinting, allowing players to unleash a powerful thunderbolt by firing their weapon. Corrupted boons provide a notable gameplay boost but also come with a downside. For instance, one corrupted boon increases damage dealt to targets while also increasing damage received from enemies.

Ryan Harris, Senior Designer for Destiny 2, explains, “We have experimented with player modifiers, such as increased health pools, no health regeneration, limited ammo drops, and revive tokens, as well as modifications to healing in the sandbox over the course of play. Build crafting is essential for success in The Nether activity. Players should focus on creating loadouts geared for survivability, as the game mode modifiers significantly increase player health pools while halting all health regeneration.”

### New Collaborations and Content

In addition to the new narrative developments, gear, and updates, the livestream also unveiled an exciting collaboration between Bungie and Lucasfilm Games to introduce Star Wars-inspired gear and accessories to Destiny 2. With the launch of Heresy, players can acquire three new armor ornaments, one for each Guardian class, inspired by the soldiers of the Galactic Empire, along with a variety of Star Wars-themed accessories.

Heresy promises a wealth of engaging content with three Acts in this episode, offering new activities, incredible gear to collect, and much more in the coming months. This episode also marks the beginning of an exciting year for Destiny 2 in 2025, so players should stay tuned for more updates and surprises.
