Sphere: The Future of Immersive Entertainment in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has always been a city known for its larger-than-life entertainment, and the latest addition to its dazzling array of attractions is Sphere, a revolutionary entertainment venue that redefines what is possible with cutting-edge display technology. Joining the ranks of iconic circular performance spaces like the Roman Colosseum and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Sphere captivates audiences with its stunning LED displays that cover nearly 750,000 square feet both inside and outside the venue.

The Heart of Sphere: Advanced Visual Technology

At the core of Sphere’s mesmerizing visual experience are around 150 NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs. These powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) are responsible for driving the breathtaking visuals on the venue’s interior 16x16K displays. To put this in perspective, traditional high-definition (HD) screens are 1080p, while 16K resolution offers 16,000 pixels horizontally, providing unprecedented clarity and detail. The exterior of Sphere, known as the Exosphere, features 1.2 million programmable LED pucks, making it the world’s largest LED screen.

To ensure seamless and synchronized visuals across all display panels, NVIDIA BlueField Data Processing Units (DPUs) and NVIDIA ConnectX-6 Dx Network Interface Cards (NICs) provide robust network connectivity. These components work in tandem with NVIDIA DOCA Firefly Service and NVIDIA Rivermax software to create a unified and synchronized canvas for the displays. This sophisticated setup ensures that the images and videos displayed are smooth and free from any lag or jitter, enhancing the overall immersive experience.

“Sphere is captivating audiences not only in Las Vegas but also around the world on social media, with immersive LED content delivered at a scale and clarity that has never been done before,” said Alex Luthwaite, Senior Vice President of Show Systems Technology at Sphere Entertainment. “This would not be possible without the expertise and innovation of companies such as NVIDIA that are critical to helping power our vision, working closely with our team to redefine what is possible with cutting-edge display technology.”

Sphere: A Recognized Marvel

Sphere has not only impressed audiences but has also garnered accolades, being named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023. The venue hosts a variety of events, including original Sphere Experiences, concerts, residencies from some of the world’s biggest artists, and premier corporate events.

Rock band U2 had the honor of opening Sphere with a 40-show run that concluded in March. Another notable event is The Sphere Experience, featuring Darren Aronofsky’s "Postcard From Earth," a specially created multisensory cinematic experience that showcases all of the venue’s immersive technologies. This includes high-resolution visuals, advanced concert-grade sound, haptic seats, and atmospheric effects such as wind and scents.

Behind the Scenes: Creating the Magic

The magic of Sphere begins at Sphere Studios in Burbank, California, where video content is created and then transferred digitally to the Las Vegas venue. The content is streamed in real-time to rack-mounted workstations equipped with NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs, delivering three layers of 16K resolution at 60 frames per second. This high-performance setup is essential for maintaining the quality and fluidity of the visuals.

NVIDIA Rivermax software plays a crucial role in media streaming acceleration, enabling direct data transfers to and from the GPU. This eliminates jitter and optimizes latency, ensuring that the visuals are as smooth as possible. NVIDIA BlueField DPUs also facilitate precision timing through the DOCA Firefly Service, which synchronizes clocks in a network with sub-microsecond accuracy.

“The integration of NVIDIA RTX GPUs, BlueField DPUs, and Rivermax software creates a powerful trifecta of advantages for modern accelerated computing, supporting the unique high-resolution video streams and strict timing requirements needed at Sphere and setting a new standard for media processing capabilities,” said Nir Nitzani, Senior Product Director for Networking Software at NVIDIA. “This collaboration results in remarkable performance gains, culminating in the extraordinary experiences guests have at Sphere.”

Sphere Studios: The Creative Hub

Sphere Entertainment has also launched Sphere Studios, dedicated to developing the next generation of original immersive entertainment. The Burbank campus includes various development facilities, including a quarter-sized version of the Sphere screen in Las Vegas, known as Big Dome. This facility serves as a specialized screening, production facility, and lab for content development.

Sphere Studios has developed the Big Sky camera system, which captures uncompressed, 18K images from a single camera. This technology allows the studio to film content for Sphere without needing to stitch multiple camera feeds together, ensuring higher quality and consistency. The studio’s custom image processing software runs on Lenovo servers powered by NVIDIA A40 GPUs.

These A40 GPUs also fuel creative work, including 3D video, virtualization, and ray tracing. Ray tracing is a rendering technique that simulates the way light interacts with objects, producing more realistic images. To develop visuals for various shows, the team works with applications like Unreal Engine, Unity, Touch Designer, and Notch.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Immersive Entertainment

Sphere is not just a venue; it is a glimpse into the future of immersive entertainment. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovative and breathtaking experiences. For those interested in exploring more about this cutting-edge technology, upcoming sessions in NVIDIA’s room at SIGGRAPH provide a deeper dive. Additionally, the panel discussion “Immersion in Sphere: Redefining Live Entertainment Experiences” on NVIDIA On-Demand offers further insights into the technology and vision behind Sphere.

In conclusion, Sphere represents a significant leap forward in the world of entertainment, combining state-of-the-art technology with creative vision to deliver an unparalleled immersive experience. Whether you are a tech enthusiast or a casual observer, Sphere is a testament to what is possible when innovation and creativity come together.
