Latest AWS Announcements

Let’s delve into some of the noteworthy announcements from AWS last week.

AWS WAF Integration with AWS Amplify Hosting
AWS has introduced a seamless integration of AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) with AWS Amplify Hosting. This integration allows users to attach AWS WAF directly to their Amplify applications using a simple one-click process or through infrastructure as code (IaC). AWS WAF provides robust protection against common web vulnerabilities like SQL injection and cross-site scripting (XSS). Additionally, users can create bespoke rules tailored to their application needs, implement rate-based measures to guard against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and set up geo-blocking to limit access from specific regions. This firewall support is available across all AWS Regions where Amplify Hosting is operational.

Amazon Bedrock Custom Model Import
Amazon Bedrock’s latest feature introduces real-time cost transparency for custom model imports. This development allows users to access comprehensive insights into compute resources and calculate inference costs in real-time. Before deploying a model, users can assess the minimum compute resources needed through the Amazon Bedrock console or APIs. As traffic scales, Amazon CloudWatch metrics offer real-time visibility into the total compute resources used, facilitating cost optimization by allowing on-the-fly model configuration adjustments. This feature is available in all Regions supporting Amazon Bedrock Custom Model Import. More details are available in the Amazon Bedrock User Guide.

Enhancements in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases
Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases now support the use of Amazon OpenSearch Managed Cluster for vector storage. This feature connects foundation models securely to company data sources for Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), ensuring that responses are more relevant and accurate. The integration with Amazon OpenSearch Managed Cluster expands the list of supported vector databases and removes the need for custom data source integrations. This update is generally available in all Regions where Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases and OpenSearch Service operate.

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails Image Content Filters
Amazon Bedrock Guardrails has announced the general availability of its advanced image content filters. These filters help block up to 88% of harmful content without needing custom safeguards or relying on manual content moderation. Content filters can be applied across various categories, including hate, insults, and violence. The Guardrails system offers configurable safeguards to detect and block harmful content, define disallowed topics, redact personally identifiable information, and check the contextual grounding of model responses. This feature is available in several AWS Regions, including the US East (N. Virginia) and Asia Pacific (Tokyo).

Scenarios Capability for Amazon Q in QuickSight
Amazon has released a new scenarios capability for Amazon Q in QuickSight, designed to guide users through data analysis. This feature helps uncover hidden trends, make recommendations, and suggest next steps through natural language interactions. Users can explore past trends, forecast future scenarios, and model solutions without specialized skills or manual data manipulation. The intuitive interface enables complex data analysis faster than traditional spreadsheets. Available through any Amazon QuickSight dashboard, this tool aids in making data-driven decisions efficiently.

Expanded Availability of AWS Services

AWS has expanded its services to additional Regions, enhancing the accessibility and functionality of its offerings.

  • Amazon DataZone is now operational in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) and Europe (Paris) Regions. This managed data management service helps catalog, discover, analyze, and share data within organizations.
  • Amazon SageMaker, a central platform for data, analytics, and AI, is now available in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) and Europe (Paris) Regions.
  • Amazon Redshift Query Editor V2 is accessible in Mexico (Central) and Asia Pacific (Thailand) Regions, providing a web-based tool for SQL users to interact with data warehouses.
  • AWS Network Firewall has been introduced in the Asia Pacific (Thailand) and Mexico (Central) Regions, offering scalable, managed firewall services.
  • Amazon CloudWatch RUM is available in Israel (Tel Aviv) and Asia Pacific (Hong Kong), monitoring web applications and providing real-time client-side performance data.
  • Amazon VPC IP Address Manager can now be used in Asia Pacific (Thailand) and Mexico (Central), simplifying IP address planning and monitoring.
  • Amazon EC2 P5en Instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia) and Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Regions, featuring enhanced GPUs and processors for high-performance computing tasks.
  • Amazon EC2 R8g and C8g Instances have been launched in various Regions, offering improved performance compared to previous generations.

These expansions are part of AWS’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its global infrastructure and providing customers with efficient, scalable solutions.
