Samsung Electronics has made a remarkable contribution to the realm of cinematic storytelling with their innovative The Wall Micro LED display, showcased at the prestigious Venice Biennale Art Festival. This event, known for celebrating artistic excellence, witnessed a unique blend of art and technology through Samsung’s participation.
During the festival, The Wall Micro LED was used to screen director Marco Perego’s new film, "Dovecote," featuring actress Zoë Saldaña. The film delves into the emotional journey of a woman who, upon release from prison, reflects on the profound connections she developed with her fellow inmates. The choice of venue for these screenings was equally compelling; they took place in the Vatican’s official pavilion, within the confines of the Giudecca women’s prison. This location, which also served as the filming site, added a layer of emotional resonance to the film, emphasizing themes of freedom, belonging, and resilience.
Unmatched Visual Experience with The Wall
Samsung Electronics’ involvement in the Venice Biennale marked a significant leap in integrating technological innovation with artistic expression. Marco Perego’s "Dovecote" required a display that could capture the film’s emotional nuances, particularly the strong bonds and isolation experienced by the inmates. The Wall’s superior color accuracy and contrast made it the perfect choice to meet these demands.
The collaboration between Perego and Samsung was seamless. Samsung offered not only advanced display technology but also comprehensive technical support, from installation to execution. This ensured that the visual depth intended by the director was fully realized.
Pioneering Micro LED Technology Enhances Visual Art
Samsung’s cutting-edge Micro LED technology was specifically selected to present "Dovecote." The Wall’s 1.2mm pixel pitch IWA model was particularly chosen for its capacity to immerse audiences in the film’s delicate visual subtleties. This model allowed Perego to convey his artistic vision with precision, presenting the film with the superior display needed to accurately portray the hues and contrasts achieved during the color grading process. The immersive viewing experience made possible by Samsung’s display technology was crucial in captivating artists, curators, and art enthusiasts worldwide.
Marco Perego highlighted the importance of the display medium in film presentation, stating, “The most important thing after you finish a film is how you show this film. Thanks to the collaboration with Samsung, we were capable of really bringing out the right color and the right contrast to achieve the emotional impact I envisioned for the film.”
The Wall’s Micro LED technology provides deep blacks and exceptional contrast, enhancing the emotional gravity of each scene and fully engaging viewers with the film’s themes and performances of Saldaña and the rest of the cast.
This collaboration with Samsung was a result of their long-standing connections with Hollywood professionals, building on previous experiences like the Cinema LED Onyx. Originally filmed at 23.98 frames per second in cinema color spaces, the teams worked together to seamlessly integrate "Dovecote’s" cinematic elements with The Wall’s advanced display technology, pushing the boundaries of traditional screens.
Paul Maloney, Head of Hardware Tech Consulting at Samsung Electronics, commented, “The Wall’s Micro LED technology resulted in a collaboration that delivered a screening with all of the elements great for the art industry. For Samsung, it has been an honor to have supported Marco Perego’s film and achieve the artistic vision he had imagined.”
Empowering Creators with Advanced Display Technology
Samsung continues to redefine the capabilities of display technology with The Wall, empowering creators in both film and art. "The Wall for Virtual Production" (IVC model) exemplifies how companies and producers can innovate their productions, thanks to ultra-large LED walls designed for virtual content. These walls seamlessly integrate real-time visual effects, reducing both production time and costs.
Samsung’s The Wall displays have been utilized by artists worldwide to bring their creative visions to life. For instance, the late Park Seo-Bo, a leader in contemporary Korean art, showcased his masterpiece on The Wall All-in-One (IAB model) 146-inch 4K screen at New York’s Rockefeller Center.
Similarly, Dutch-American audiovisual artist 0010×0010 used The Wall All-in-One during an exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand, to explore the convergence of digital and physical worlds. These instances showcase how The Wall is redefining the boundaries of modern art.
Samsung Electronics’ participation in the 60th Venice Biennale is more than just a milestone in their support of the arts; it signifies the future of art and technology converging. By continually pushing the limits of display technology, Samsung opens up new possibilities for creators globally, enabling them to tell their stories with unparalleled visual depth and clarity.
