NewsUnveiling Savage Planet: A Fresh Take on '90s Nostalgia

The ever-evolving world of video games is set to welcome a new chapter in the beloved Savage Planet franchise. This exciting continuation, aptly titled “Revenge of the Savage Planet,” is brought to you by the original creators, now operating under the name Raccoon Logic, previously known as Typhoon Studios. The much-anticipated release is slated for May 2025 and will be available on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The original “Journey to the Savage Planet,” launched in 2020, captivated players with its unique blend of humor and exploration. It is still accessible via the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. Now, Raccoon Logic is expanding the universe with their latest sci-fi adventure, promising a comical survival story where explorers are tasked with the peculiar challenge of entertaining themselves to death.

In “Revenge of the Savage Planet,” players will be thrust into a vibrant cosmos, teeming with four distinct planets to explore. The game is designed to be larger and more dynamic than its predecessor, offering a cooperative gameplay experience right from the start. Players can expect to build and personalize their habitats, explore alien terrains, and catalog a myriad of discoveries. The new third-person perspective will allow for immersive gameplay as players run, jump, shoot, and collect resources to craft and upgrade their abilities. This journey will uncover hidden secrets and offer endless opportunities for adventure.

A standout feature of this sequel is the introduction of a fifth, secret planet. This mysterious world deviates from the norm, inhabited by creatures that are far from natural. Members of the Raccoon Logic team have shared insights into the design philosophies that inspired this peculiar addition. The intention is to create an unpredictable environment, contrasting starkly with the organic and natural open worlds players are familiar with.

A World Inspired by Retro Arcades and 90’s Entertainment

The fifth planet in “Revenge of the Savage Planet” draws inspiration from retro arcades and 90s entertainment. It is filled with fresh challenges, insane verticality, and uniquely modified creatures. This final world promises to answer all the lingering questions within the game, according to Reid Schneider, the Studio Head.

Steve Masters, the Lead Designer, explains that this digital world serves as a narrative vehicle, enhancing the mystery of the game. The dark and dangerous lair of Slappi, a character within this universe, is a testament to the studio’s creative vision. Despite the new setting, players can still expect to encounter the weird and wacky alien creatures that the franchise is known for.

The audio design of this new world also takes a unique approach. Audio Director Cameron Jarvis describes the soundscape as a blend of pinball machine and game show set tones, evolving into the experience of being inside a giant computer with playful 8-bit sparkles. This auditory journey complements the visual aesthetics, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

Art Director Erick Bilodeau shares that the team aimed to provide entertainment value by incorporating robot toys, which are both intriguing and fun. The design team drew inspiration from various retro arcade gaming sources, creating a nostalgic vibe with a hard surface modeling style and retro wave neon colors, paying homage to 90s entertainment.

Local and Online Co-op

“Revenge of the Savage Planet” offers multiple gameplay options, including online co-op with cross-play capabilities and local split-screen co-op, often referred to as couch co-op. For those who prefer a solitary experience, the game also features a single-player mode.

Producer Noemie L’Ecuyer highlights the game’s systematic design approach, which fosters extraordinary interactions and outcomes for players to explore and experiment with. This design is integrated into every aspect of the game, ensuring that each playthrough offers something new and different.

Players are encouraged to wishlist the game on the PlayStation Store to stay informed about launch week specials, including an in-game trash panda suit and potential launch discounts. Pre-order, purchase, and additional launch details are expected to be announced soon.

For fans of the Savage Planet franchise, “Revenge of the Savage Planet” promises to be an exhilarating addition that builds upon the humor and adventure of its predecessor. The game launches in May 2025, and the journey promises to be one of discovery, creativity, and endless fun.
