Her early years were a blend of her father’s affection and the excitement of seafaring adventures. However, her fate took a dark turn when a notorious pirate named Mad Molak attacked her father’s ship, Nightsdream. The massacre that followed left nearly everyone aboard dead.
Portia was spared, forced to serve as a celestial navigator for the pirates. This role eventually led her down a dark path, consumed by the desire for revenge. She managed to steer the ship into Dragon’s Tooth, a feared location, effectively ending her captors. Remarkably, she survived this harrowing ordeal, emerging as the lone survivor until she found her loyal puppy, Snug.
Portia’s transformation into The Houndmaster is fascinating. Initially, she was a quintessential survivor, having endured the brutal attack on Nightsdream and years stranded on Dragon’s Tooth. Despite these challenges, her mind became singularly focused on revenge, which fueled her increasingly violent tendencies over time.
Unbeknownst to Portia, Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed, a rare intersection between different realms. Bleeds are like a meeting point where elements from two dimensions mix. As Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind puts it, “Entering a Bleed can either kill you or drive you mad.” Portia’s descent into madness paralleled her growing mastery of violence, creating a Killer whose ruthlessness would eventually eclipse even that of Mad Molak.
Her transformation was complete when she hunted down and exacted vengeance on Molak, securing her place in The Entity’s realm. Her only remaining connection to her humanity was her bond with Snug, her faithful dog. This relationship is reflected in The Houndmaster’s Power within the game, where Snug plays a crucial role in tracking and capturing Survivors.
For the Black Talon: Taurie Cain’s Journey
Taurie Cain grew up within the Black Talon organization, a subgroup of the nefarious Black Vale. Her upbringing was marked by a quest to uncover The Entity’s secrets. When her parents discovered a Bleed and entered it to continue their research, Taurie followed them, narrowly avoiding disaster.
This experience deepened her commitment to the Black Talon’s cause, and she quickly rose through the ranks. Unlike some other Survivors, such as Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto, who opposed the Black Vale, Taurie embraced the darkness. She believed that The Entity held the key to transcending the limits of human existence.
Jessi Thind explains, “Taurie grew up in the Black Talon and genuinely believes her actions are for humanity’s benefit. But as she ascended the ranks, she faced darker challenges, ultimately reaching a point of no return.” This led to a life-changing decision: Taurie was tasked with killing Jordan Rois, a man who was a significant obstacle for the Talon and the stepbrother of Survivor Haddie Kaur. However, Taurie hesitated, a pivotal moment that occurred just before her entry into The Fog.
In The Fog, Taurie discovered the harsh reality of her beliefs. Her initial enthusiasm turned to horror as she realized that her years of devotion had trapped her in a cycle of pain and suffering. Despite this revelation, Taurie remained resolute, convinced that her true purpose had yet to be revealed.
Her dedication to the Vale might prove advantageous in The Fog, as she clings to the belief that everything is part of a larger plan. Taurie is determined to continue along this path until The Entity acknowledges her as a disciple, potentially transforming her into a Killer.
This raises an intriguing question: why did The Entity bring Taurie into its Realm as a Survivor? Thind offers insight, stating, “The Entity feeds on emotions and may have sensed a benefit in having someone like Taurie, who naturally conflicts with other Survivors. Her resentment and lack of understanding fuel emotions like anger and mistrust, which The Entity thrives on.”
Despite these conflicts, Taurie is determined to survive in her new environment. Her abilities focus on quickly distancing herself from teammates and drawing the Killer’s attention, using her pain to her advantage.
The Intersection of Portia and Taurie’s Stories
It’s noteworthy that both Portia and Taurie have interacted with Bleeds, yet Taurie seems largely unaffected. Under different circumstances, their roles in The Entity’s Realm might have been swapped. However, once a path is chosen, deviation is unlikely, especially when the destination is obscured by The Fog.
