AI in Action

Introduction

In a recent report titled “AI in Action,” IBM has revealed compelling insights into how businesses are adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their operations. This report, which is based on a comprehensive survey conducted by Harris Poll, examines the AI strategies of 2,000 companies across five nations: the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, and Germany. The findings identify significant differences between companies that are leading in AI adoption, termed “AI Leaders,” and those still in the learning phase, referred to as “Learners.”

Understanding AI Leaders and Learners

According to the report, 15% of the surveyed companies are categorized as AI Leaders. These organizations are significantly ahead of their peers in using AI to drive business value. The remaining 85% are termed as Learners, indicating they are still in the early stages of AI integration. AI Leaders have reported that AI has already contributed to a 25% or more improvement in their revenue growth rate. This statistic underscores the potential of AI in generating substantial business benefits when effectively implemented.

Shobhit Varshney, VP & Sr. Partner, Americas AI Leader at IBM Consulting, highlights that the report delves deep into the data to understand how these AI Leaders are implementing AI in ways that others can learn from.

Key Findings of the Report

The IBM report identifies four critical factors that distinguish AI Leaders from Learners:

1. **Investment**: A major differentiator is the level of investment in AI. Approximately 71% of AI Leaders describe their organizations as highly aggressive in investing in AI technologies. In contrast, only 19% of Learners claim the same level of investment. This indicates that significant financial commitment is pivotal in achieving AI leadership.

2. **AI Data Management**: Effective data management is crucial for supporting AI initiatives. AI Leaders exhibit higher confidence in their data management capabilities, with 61% expressing such confidence compared to just 11% of Learners. This suggests that having a robust data management strategy is essential for successful AI implementation.

3. **Strategic Focus and Alignment**: AI Leaders show a greater degree of alignment between their C-suite executives and IT leadership. About 72% of AI Leaders report this strategic alignment, compared to 36% of Learners. Furthermore, AI Leaders are 80% more likely to invest in four key use cases: enhancing customer experience, IT operations and automation, virtual assistants, and cybersecurity. This focus indicates that strategic alignment and targeted investments are critical for achieving AI maturity.

4. **Ability to Customize**: Customization of AI solutions is another area where AI Leaders excel. They are more than twice as likely to express confidence in their ability to tailor AI efforts for optimal value (72% versus 33% of Learners). In practice, 61% of Leaders utilize Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to create bespoke solutions, compared to 28% of Learners. This ability to customize solutions allows AI Leaders to better address their unique business needs.
