Immersive LED Display Transforms Myeongdong Square Into Seoul’s Newest Iconic Landmark
Samsung Electronics has once again pushed the boundaries of digital display technology by unveiling an impressive outdoor LED signage at the Shinsegae Department Store in Myeongdong, Seoul, South Korea. This state-of-the-art installation, part of the "2024 Lights Up SEOUL, KOREA" event, promises to redefine the visitor experience by transforming Myeongdong Square into a vibrant hub of visual and cultural significance.
This remarkable installation, known as the XHB Series (P8), is not just another digital billboard. It spans an impressive 71.8 meters in width and 17.9 meters in height, wrapping around the Shinsegae Department Store to create an immersive visual spectacle. To put it in perspective, the display is as large as three basketball courts combined, making it one of the most expansive digital displays in the region.
Located in the heart of the Myeongdong Special Tourist Zone, the Shinsegae Department Store enjoys a unique position as a free outdoor advertising zone, allowing for creative and ambitious installations like this one. Samsung’s anamorphic 8K LED display is designed to captivate passersby with its breathtaking visuals, providing a new dimension to the bustling shopping district.
Samsung’s Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business, Hoon Chung, expressed the company’s vision for the installation: “Our LED displays present unlimited possibilities for places like Myeongdong to bear new elements of cultural significance. This installation gives us an opportunity to showcase in the biggest way possible that our outdoor digital displays are built to engage, built to deliver impactful content, and built to last.”
One of the standout features of this installation is its resilience. It is engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions, boasting an IP66 rating for dust and water resistance. Additionally, it has earned UL 48 and UL 746C certifications, which assure its durability in various environmental conditions, including resistance to UV rays and weathering.
The display’s technical specifications are equally impressive. It supports HDR10+ technology, ensuring vibrant color accuracy and sharp contrast, making every visual element pop. With a maximum brightness of 8,000 nits, the content on the display remains clear and visible even under direct sunlight. Moreover, its high refresh rate of 7,680Hz minimizes flicker and the moiré effect, which is a visual distortion that can occur when images are captured by cameras. This ensures that the display remains visually stable and appealing, whether viewed directly or through a lens.
Samsung’s prowess in digital signage is well-established globally. In South Korea, the company has delivered the country’s largest high-definition LED signage to venues like Coex SM Town. Internationally, their installations at New York’s Citi Field and Houston’s Minute Maid Park have set new standards for in-stadium displays. For instance, Citi Field now boasts the largest scoreboard in professional baseball, equipped with over 29,800 square feet of LED screens, immersing fans in the action from every angle. Similarly, at Minute Maid Park, Samsung’s high-definition LED technology has redefined the fan experience with massive outdoor displays and an innovative main scoreboard.
In Myeongdong, the new installation will serve more than just advertising purposes. It is poised to become a dynamic media façade, hosting engaging advertisements and captivating video content. As the holiday season approaches, it will transform into a stunning Christmas media façade, adding a festive touch to the area and delighting visitors with its visual splendor.
A spokesperson from Shinsegae shared their excitement about the collaboration with Samsung, stating, “Shinsegae’s media façade, beloved by global customers for the past 10 years, has now been recreated as Shinsegae Square. This transformation paves the way for it to become an iconic landmark of Seoul, making it not only a must-visit attraction but also a central hub for K-culture. We are excited to partner with Samsung to bring our customers unique experiences that blend heritage and digital technology.”
Samsung’s Outdoor LED Signage has garnered recognition for its exceptional performance in demanding environments. Notable installations include the world’s largest LED videoboard at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and a 481-foot-long rooftop LED display in the shape of the F1 logo at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. These achievements demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to leading the industry with innovative solutions that inspire and engage audiences worldwide.
As Myeongdong evolves into a global tourism destination, Samsung continues to play a pivotal role in shaping visitor experiences with its cutting-edge display technology. This new installation not only enhances the visual landscape of Myeongdong but also reinforces Samsung’s position as a leader in the digital signage industry.
