Discovering the Magic of Metaphor: ReFantazio – A Deep Dive into Atlus’s New RPG Adventure
If you’re a fan of Atlus’s immersive role-playing games, the buzz around their upcoming title, Metaphor: ReFantazio, has likely caught your attention. While it doesn’t directly tie into the popular Persona series, this new game offers several intriguing similarities and new experiences that will appeal to both long-time enthusiasts and newcomers alike. As we approach the release date of October 11, let’s explore what makes Metaphor: ReFantazio a game worth anticipating.
Unleashing Combat Dynamics
Metaphor: ReFantazio offers a combat system that will feel familiar to fans of Persona’s fast-paced turn-based battles, but with an innovative twist. Studio Zero, the creative minds behind the game, have introduced a real-time combat element for encounters with lower-level enemies. This means you can eliminate these foes with a few well-placed strikes or even a single blow if your character is significantly stronger.
Additionally, the game features a dedicated dodge button to help you avoid enemy attacks, which is particularly useful against tougher adversaries. If an enemy proves too challenging for real-time combat, you can switch to a turn-based battle after weakening them with an initial strike. This strategic layer adds depth to encounters, allowing players to gain a tactical advantage by surprising enemies and initiating a turn-based Squad Battle.
In some instances, however, real-time combat can catch you off guard. For example, a group of aggressive creatures might break through barriers to initiate a Squad Battle, gaining an initial strike against your party. To prevent such surprises, players can use the protagonist’s Fae Sight ability to survey the surroundings and assess threat levels. And if a battle turns dire, there’s always the option to restart using the L3 button.
Mastering Time Management
As the main storyline unfolds, players must skillfully manage their time to achieve various objectives. This includes gaining democratic popularity, creating bonds with party members, and reaching significant story milestones. Similar to Persona, each task consumes time, pushing you closer to key events. Failing to meet deadlines for critical events can result in a game over, so planning each day is crucial.
Players must decide when to delve into time-consuming dungeons and when to rest or engage in more peaceful activities. Fortunately, all activities are clearly marked with the amount of time they consume, helping players avoid unexpected setbacks.
Exploring the United Kingdom of Euchronia
Metaphor: ReFantazio quickly establishes its unique setting, a world distinct from our Earth and fraught with danger. The game’s narrative begins with a shocking act of regicide and continues to explore themes of prejudice and the power of imagination, particularly in overcoming personal fears and anxieties. The medieval fantasy backdrop serves as a rich canvas for these themes to unfold.
Redefining Humanity
In the world of Metaphor: ReFantazio, the term ‘human’ is synonymous with massive, grotesque creatures feared by various fantasy races. The protagonist, with their striking blue hair, stands out as a rare figure in a world populated by the horned Clemar Tribe, elf-like Roussainte Tribe, fairies, and numerous other species.
A Musical Transformation
The Persona series is celebrated for its eclectic musical range, from rock to acid jazz and electronic beats. Metaphor: ReFantazio, however, leans towards a more orchestral soundtrack, featuring tense strings, dramatic drums, and powerful chants in its beautifully composed battle themes. Fans of the Shin Megami Tensei series will likely find a familiar rhythm in its tonal composition.
From Summoning to Transforming
While Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Archetype forms may resemble Persona’s summoning system, there are distinct differences. Archetypes are awakened when a party member confronts and overcomes a personal fear or anxiety, unlocking a magical armored form with enhanced abilities.
These transformations are part of a job system, allowing party members to switch between over 40 uniquely skilled Archetypes spread across 14 lineages. Players can customize their party with combinations like a Saviour from the Healer lineage, a Ninja Thief, and a Devil Summoner, or a Magic Knight, Dragoon Gunner, and Martial Artist Brawler. These combinations enable spectacular Synthesis Skills in battle.
Discovering a Safe Haven
Early in the game, players are transported to the mysterious Akademeia, a magical library that serves as a safe haven. Here, players can learn about Archetypes through books and lectures, unlocking additional abilities. While initially a mandatory destination, players can later choose to visit Akademeia at their discretion.
Unlocking Akademeia’s Secrets
Akademeia is more than just a hub for study and growth; it also offers a space for the game’s meta commentary on imagination and storytelling. One of the earliest actions in the game involves typing in your own name, connecting you to the narrative in a unique way. And yes, there’s a delightful cat to pet, which became a personal priority during my exploration.
A Stylish Evolution
While Metaphor: ReFantazio embraces the medieval fantasy RPG genre, it does so with a distinct style. From anime cutscenes to lively battle chatter and sleek victory outros, the game rivals Persona in its flair. The user interface strikes a balance between familiarity and innovation, opting for a more uniform aesthetic.
The game also skillfully uses color, blending bold and naturalistic palettes to create an eye-catching visual experience without sacrificing Atlus’s signature polish.
A Protagonist with a Voice
A notable feature of Metaphor: ReFantazio is that the protagonist is fully voice-acted, just like the other characters. Although you can name the protagonist, most dialogue is delivered via text with occasional vocalization.
A Union of Tribes
Each party member you develop represents one of the main tribes in the game world. For instance, the stoic knight Hulkenberg hails from the Roussainte Tribe, while Heismay, a member of the rodent-like Eugief tribe, awakens the thief archetype. The diminutive yet loyal fairy Gallica may not fight but offers valuable guidance on your journey.
Building Bonds with Followers
While romantic connections akin to those in Persona might not be present, building relationships remains important. Interacting with party members and NPCs helps form bonds, which in turn can awaken new Archetypes and unlock additional abilities.
Real-Life Connections Through Online Features
Staying connected online provides access to the Travellers’ Voices page. By pressing the Touch Pad, players can see what strategies other players have used in the current area. This feature is especially helpful for dungeon exploration, allowing you to adjust your party formation for better success.
Travellers’ Voices also provides insights into how other players spend their time in towns, offering guidance for using free time effectively in Euchronia.
Rich, full of surprises, and elegantly stylish, Metaphor: ReFantazio is poised to delight both fans of Atlus’s games and newcomers alike. If you haven’t yet experienced it through the PS5 demo, you’ll have the opportunity to dive into this magical world when the full game launches on October 11 for PS4 and PS5.
