Meta Collaborates with UK Banks to Fight Fraud

NewsMeta Collaborates with UK Banks to Fight Fraud

Today marks an important milestone in the fight against online fraud, as a unique information-sharing initiative with banks has been expanded to further protect individuals from scams. Known as the Fraud Intelligence Reciprocal Exchange (FIRE), this threat intelligence sharing programme enables financial institutions to share pertinent information directly with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This collaboration aims to enhance the detection and prevention of fraudulent activities, safeguarding users across multiple platforms. NatWest and Metro Bank are the first banks in the UK to join this pilot programme, with additional banks expected to participate soon.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Global Head of Counter-Fraud at Meta, stated, "This initiative has already led to significant actions against thousands of scam-related accounts, underscoring the importance of collaboration between banks and platforms in addressing this societal issue. We can only defeat these criminals by working together and sharing relevant scam-related information. Financial institutions provide unique insights that we can use to train our systems and take global action against more scams."

The expansion of the FIRE initiative has been met with positive feedback from various stakeholders in the banking industry, including the City of London Police and the National Economic Crime Centre.

Key Successes from the Initial Pilot

The early stages of the FIRE pilot have already yielded impressive results. One notable success was the dismantling of a substantial concert ticket scam network that targeted individuals in both the UK and the US. Through data sharing between NatWest, Metro Bank, and Meta, facilitated under the collaborative framework of Stop Scams UK, approximately 20,000 scam-related accounts were removed from around 185 URLs provided by the banks. This has significantly bolstered Meta’s fraud detection capabilities.

The feedback from the initial pilot has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting plans to onboard more banks in the coming months. This will allow for continued testing and learning, ensuring that the initiative evolves and improves over time.

Industry Reactions and Statements

David Lindberg, CEO of Retail Banking at NatWest, emphasized the importance of preemptive measures in fraud prevention. "Spotting and stopping fraudsters before they can target customers is the best way to address this growing problem. Partnering with Meta is a crucial step in combating the fraud epidemic. We welcome the opportunity to deepen our collaboration and ensure a cross-industry approach to fraud prevention and enforcement."

Faisal Hussain, Chief Operating Officer at Metro Bank, echoed similar sentiments. "Scams are an industry-wide problem that requires industry-wide solutions. Our work with Meta has been an inspiring example of how we can collaborate to protect consumers from online fraudsters. By sharing this information, we hope to significantly improve scam detection and enforcement, ultimately creating a safer digital environment for everyone."

Adrian Searle, Director of the National Economic Crime Centre, also expressed his support for the initiative. "The expansion of Meta’s scam reporting channel, following a successful pilot, is welcome news. It demonstrates a commitment to tackling online fraud by consolidating data from both the banking and technology sectors. This follows the establishment of the Online Fraud Charter in 2023, where leading tech companies signed a voluntary agreement to reduce the risk of fraud and financial exploitation on their platforms. Public-private partnerships are key to preventing this pervasive threat. We look forward to working with Meta, building on FIRE’s early success, and sharing data across sectors to address the fraud threat at scale."

Nik Adams, Temporary Assistant Commissioner at the City of London Police, highlighted the importance of the tech industry’s involvement in combating online fraud. "As the national lead force for fraud, we welcome Meta’s commitments following the launch of the Online Fraud Charter last year and now Meta’s scam reporting channel. It is vital for the tech industry to play a role in the fight against online fraud. We hope this expansion will rapidly enhance Meta’s ability to act on harmful content and support the broader fight against fraud through intelligence sharing and insights that disrupt criminals, design out fraud, and protect victims."

Mark Tierney, CEO of Stop Scams UK, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaborative efforts. "We’re delighted to see some of our member banks join Meta’s FIRE initiative. This is another positive example of cross-sector collaboration. We believe FIRE could become a gamechanger for reporting fraudulent content, helping protect consumers and ensuring that both banks and Meta gain better visibility of the abuse carried out on their systems by scammers. At Stop Scams UK, we passionately believe that collaborative projects like FIRE can lead to wider data sharing and improved reporting, which is essential for successfully tackling scams."
