Lenovo Joins European Commission’s AI Pact to Foster Responsible AI Development

Lenovo has officially signed the European Commission’s AI Pact, demonstrating its commitment to developing AI systems that are both trustworthy and aligned with global safety and ethical standards. This voluntary initiative is part of Lenovo’s broader mission to promote the use of smarter AI for everyone and to advance responsible AI practices across its entire range of operations, solutions, services, and devices.

By signing this pact, Lenovo is pledging to adopt a thorough AI governance strategy that includes identifying and mitigating risks associated with high-risk AI systems. This commitment also involves enhancing AI literacy among its employees and implementing robust data quality measures for training AI models. Additionally, Lenovo will work towards increasing transparency by explicitly labeling AI-generated content and ensuring users are aware when they are interacting with AI technologies.

“Driving responsible AI is something we charge everyone with doing at Lenovo – from the tools we use and how transparent we are about our use of AI to how we innovate and create products, services, and solutions,” said Doug Fisher, Chief Security and AI Officer at Lenovo. “With governance at the core of what we do, we ensure we maintain the trust of our customers today and help them navigate the fast-moving landscape of AI in a responsible way into the future too.”

The AI Pact encourages organizations to voluntarily align with key provisions of the AI Act even before its official implementation. This initiative fosters constructive dialogue between policymakers and AI leaders, promoting transparency, best practices, and collaboration.

Lenovo’s participation in the AI Pact underscores the company’s proactive approach to preparing for the upcoming AI regulatory environment, making such considerations foundational to its AI-related services and solutions. This new signing complements other government-led initiatives on responsible AI that Lenovo has joined, including commitments with the Canadian government and UNESCO.

“At Lenovo, we’re committed to leading the development of trustworthy AI systems that prioritize safety, privacy, and transparency,” said Shama Patari, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Lenovo. “By joining the European Commission’s AI Pact, we are reinforcing our commitment to working closely with policymakers to drive responsible AI innovation, ensuring Lenovo’s technologies align with the highest ethical standards while delivering societal benefits.”

This agreement builds on Lenovo’s growing investment in AI technologies. These investments include the development of original generative AI models, a hybrid AI approach that emphasizes privacy, security, and power for both enterprises and individuals, and a comprehensive portfolio that delivers the latest AI advancements to everyone.

Lenovo has established a Responsible AI Committee with an internal governance framework to oversee ethical, legal, safety, and privacy-related concerns. This framework ensures the safe and responsible deployment of emerging AI solutions. The company evaluates its AI solutions against key pillars, including diversity and inclusion, privacy and security, accountability and reliability, explainability, transparency, and environmental and social impact.

In conclusion, Lenovo’s commitment to the European Commission’s AI Pact and other responsible AI initiatives reflects its dedication to creating AI technologies that adhere to the highest ethical standards. By fostering transparency, enhancing AI literacy, and prioritizing safety and privacy, Lenovo aims to lead the industry in developing trustworthy AI systems that benefit society as a whole.
