Annual Report for 2024 Fiscal Year Highlights Foundation’s Commitment to Public Good Since 1999

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), a dedicated group of volunteers managing over 320 active open source projects, has released its annual report for the fiscal year 2024, which ended on April 30, 2024. You can download the full report here.

David Nalley, the President of ASF, commented on the evolving landscape of the technology industry. “With the advent of new government regulations for open source and disruptive technologies like generative AI, it’s crucial for leading open source organizations like the ASF to remain vigilant and responsive to market demands. This past fiscal year, the ASF demonstrated its capacity to adapt while maintaining its core mission of providing open source software for the public good.”

The ASF celebrated its 25th anniversary on March 24, 2024. For over two decades, the foundation has been at the forefront of innovation in open source, establishing industry standards for licensing and security. Their work is driven by the principles of the Apache Way, a philosophy that emphasizes community-driven development.

FY24 Highlights

    • The ASF responded to the White House Office of the National Cyber Director’s (ONCD) Request for Information (RFI) on “Open-Source Software Security and Memory Safe Programming Languages.” They provided substantial advice to EU policymakers to define best practices for open source security.
    • ASF joined the Open Regulatory Compliance Working Group to tackle the complex challenges of cybersecurity in the open source ecosystem, showing their commitment to complying with and implementing the CRA.
    • The ASF Legal committee created guidelines to help ASF and its communities navigate the usage of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
    • ASF enhanced developer productivity by welcoming Gradle as a targeted sponsor. ASF projects now have access to Develocity (formerly Gradle Enterprise) as part of its infrastructure service. Projects like Apache Beam, Apache Kafka, Apache Lucene, and Apache Pulsar are using Develocity for weekly builds.
    • ASF projects have been used for public good in various areas, including cancer research, clean energy research, and reducing food waste. Examples include Apache Superset, Apache Airflow, Apache Storm, and Apache IoTDB.
