Understanding the origin and modifications of content is vital for making informed decisions about the material we encounter daily, including photos, videos, and audio. By providing this information, we aim to enhance media literacy and build trust among users.

Partnering with other industry players is essential to increase transparency across platforms. Earlier this year, we joined the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) as a steering committee member, emphasizing our commitment to this cause.

Advancing Existing Technology to Create More Secure Credentials

Provenance technology is designed to explain the origins of a piece of content. For instance, it can indicate whether a photo was taken with a camera, edited by software, or generated by AI. This information helps users make informed decisions about the content they engage with, enhancing their understanding and trust in the media.

As part of the C2PA steering committee, we have been collaborating with other members to develop and enhance technology that attaches provenance information to content. In the first half of this year, Google contributed to the development of the latest version (2.1) of the technical standard known as Content Credentials. This version is more secure against a wider range of tampering attacks, thanks to stricter technical requirements for validating the content’s provenance history. By strengthening these protections, we ensure that the data attached to content is not altered or misleading.

Incorporating the C2PA’s Standard into Our Products

In the coming months, we will integrate the latest version of Content Credentials into several key products:

Search

When an image contains C2PA metadata, users can utilize our "About this image" feature to determine if it was created or edited using AI tools. This feature provides context about the images users see online and is accessible in Google Images, Lens, and Circle to Search.

Ads

Our ad systems are beginning to incorporate C2PA metadata. Over time, we aim to expand this integration and use C2PA signals to inform our policy enforcement.

We are also exploring ways to relay C2PA information to viewers on YouTube when content is captured with a camera. More updates on this will be provided later in the year.

We will ensure that our implementations validate content against the forthcoming C2PA Trust list, which allows platforms to confirm the content’s origin. For example, if the data indicates that an image was taken by a specific camera model, the trust list helps verify this information’s accuracy.

These are just a few examples of how we are implementing content provenance technology today. We will continue to extend this technology to more products over time.

Continuing to Partner with Others in the Industry

Establishing and signaling content provenance is a complex challenge that varies depending on the product or service. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for all online content, working with other industry players is crucial to creating sustainable and interoperable solutions. Therefore, we encourage more services and hardware providers to consider adopting the C2PA’s Content Credentials.

Our work with the C2PA complements our broader approach to transparency and responsible AI development. For instance, we are continuing to expand SynthID — an embedded watermarking technology developed by Google DeepMind — to additional generative AI tools for content creation, covering various media forms, including text, audio, visual, and video. We have also joined several other coalitions and groups focused on AI safety and research. Additionally, we introduced a Secure AI Framework (SAIF) and coalition and continue to make progress on the voluntary commitments we made at the White House last year.
